This isn't the Northeast, but I ran across this photo taken at Lakewood Speedway which was in Atlanta, Ga. The driver got out of the car and walked away and the car then burst into flames. The track crew was unable to extinguish the fire so they pushed it into the infield lake, which did put the fire out. I just hope it doesn't give any track operators the idea of getting rid of fire trucks and building lakes in the infield. This was around 1949.
